Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The Hinweise zur Nutzung von KI und generativen Modellen bei der ESP have been acknowledged by all authors. All authors undertake to describe any use in the Checkliste - Sicherung guter wissenschaftlicher Praxis.
  • The article is unpublished and has not been submitted to any other journal (otherwise an explanation is attached in ‘Comments for the editors’).
  • The file is available in DOC, DOCX or RTF format.
  • In accordance with the manuscript guidelines, identifiers (e.g. doi) were given for all references, if available.
  • The text is double-spaced, Times New Roman, font size 12, italicised if necessary, not underlined (with the exception of URLs).
  • The text complies with the formal, stylistic and bibliographical requirements in the guidelines for authors.
  • In addition to the manuscript, an anonymised version of the manuscript was created. This does not contain any references to the identity of the authors.
  • The authors confirm and guarantee that they own all copyrights to the submitted contribution without restriction and that the contribution does not infringe any third-party rights.
If protected materials are reproduced (including any images, drawings, plans, maps, sketches and tables), the authors must inform the editorial team in the cover letter and provide the relevant authorisations from the copyright holders.
  • The final version of the article (including the author line-up) was explicitly approved by all authors.

Author Guidelines

In principle, only contributions that have not previously been published (including in another language) and are not currently undergoing a review process elsewhere may be submitted. If the article has already undergone another review process, the authors should inform the editorial team when submitting the article. In principle, the following article types can be considered for publication in Empirical Special Education. The maximum length refers to the entire manuscript including the German and English summaries, the bibliography and all figures and tables.

  • Empirical original papers in which significant findings from specially conducted studies are presented (up to 5500 words / 45,000 characters including spaces).
  • Systematic reviews of the results of empirical research on a specific topic (up to 6500 words / 54,000 characters incl. spaces).
  • Research method papers describing innovative data collection methods, designs or evaluation approaches relevant to special education (up to 4500 words / 38,000 characters including spaces).
  • Original theoretical papers in which new models are presented or existing approaches are modified or extended. The explanations should be based on the current state of empirical research and contain references to the most important studies on the topic (up to 6500 words / 54,000 characters incl. spaces).

COPE Standards Commitment

Empirische Sonderpädagogik’ and its editors follow the standards of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE; https://publicationethics.org). The authors, reviewers, guest editors and all members of the editorial board and the scientific advisory board undertake to comply with the standards.

Manuscript design

The formal design of the manuscripts follows the guidelines in the manuscript design guidelines of the American Psychological Association, in the 7th, updated edition (APA, 2020).

You submit a complete file (.doc, .docx or .rtf) with all manuscript parts and an anonymised file (without authors' names and with anonymisation of all direct references to the authors in the text and in file names) for review.

The order of the manuscript parts is as follows:

  • Title page with German and English title, full name (incl. institution with location, without institute or faculty), correspondence address incl. email
Summary (max. 250 words) and up to 5 keywords from common specialised databases
  • Abstract (max. 250 words) and up to 5 keywords preferably from common specialised databases
  • Text (with placement requests for tables and figures; ‘### Please insert table 1 here ###’)
  • References (including the doi or other identifiers if assigned)
  • Tables (each table on a new page)
  • Figures (each figure on a new page)

Furthermore, the ‘Checklist - Safeguarding good scientific practice’ must be completed by all authors and submitted with the manuscript. A revision of the information after revision rounds is possible.

Review of manuscripts

All submitted papers are forwarded to at least two peers (including at least one member of the scientific advisory board ‘Empirical Special Education’) for review. The reviews are double-blind, i.e. the names and institutions of the authors are not disclosed to the reviewers. The editors decide on the acceptance of a manuscript for publication on the basis of the reviewers' recommendations. The first author receives an email notification of the respective vote as well as extracts from the reviews. Once an article has been accepted for publication, the publisher sends the galley proofs to the first author for final correction and approval before printing. Only typos and minor spelling and grammatical errors can then be corrected, but no further changes can be made to the content.
